The international conference in Gomel will be dedicated to availability and role of education for prison inmates

Celebrating the International Day of Education in Prison observed on the 13th of October, the organizers are pleased to announce the start of registration for the international conference «Educational, socio-correctional activities and psychological aid in the penitentiary system", that is to be held on November 16-18, 2016 in Gomel City.

On October 13, 1989, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe issued Recommendation No. R (89) 12 «Education in prison». This Recommendation states that all prisoners shall have access to educational activities that contribute to their self-development and reintegration into society as well as reduce the risk of recidivism. The Recommendation of the Council of Europe served as a basis for the work of the European Prison Education Association (ЕPEA) and was included in educational legislation of a number of European countries. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Recommendation, in 2014 EPEA proposed to designate 13 October as the International Day of Education in Prison.

Supporting this initiative, the organizers invite all interested parties to take part in the discussion of accessibility of education in the penitentiary system, actual trends, prospects and areas for developing education in prisons and to redefine the role of education in the resocialization and social adaptation of prisoners in the frame of the Conference on November 16-18, 2016.

The conference will also provide unique and successful practices of educational activities in prisons (providing higher education for prisoners through distance learning, implementation of short-term programs for the development of life skills and social responsibility, etc.).

The conference is conducted within the project “Education opens doors” implemented by the Representative Office of the German Adult Education Association in the Republic of Belarus, NGO “Community Development Projects” and the Department of Penalty Execution of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Republic of Belarus). The project is financed by the European Union and DVV International (from the funds of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, BMZ).

More information about the Conference, as well as the application form can be found here.
