The Project "Replacing walls with open windows"

The Project "Replacing walls with open windows" was implemented by DVV-International together with Information and Research Center 'Integration and Development' during 2016. The main purpose of the project was to promote cultural cooperation in local communities across Ukraine by strengthening the knowledge and skills of civil society activists, local cultural institutions, local authorities and journalists within the framework of cultural and educational initiatives targeted to support cultural diversity and promote innovative approaches in adult education.

During the project, various cultural institutions in partnership with local community activists expanded their functions, developed cultural and educational programs for different groups of adults. Cultural institutions became local platforms for reconciliation and cooperative dialogue to strengthen mutual trust at local and inter-regional levels.

Target audience:

• NGO activists;

• specialists of cultural institutions (cultural centers, museums, libraries, etc.);

• representatives of government and local self-governance;

• journalists of local media.

Nine mini-projects resulted in opening three new adult education centers in Zhytomyr, Sumy and Smila with participation of all target groups.

Librarians and staff from local museums and clubs from 9 regions participated in trainings on professionalization and learned about modern museum practices, event management, cultural management, successful communication technologies and conflicts prevention.

Educational program for representatives of all target groups included project management skills, Ukrainian and foreign case studies, training in cultural entrepreneurship, partnership development and cooperation between educational institutions, training for journalists on new methods of project initiatives information support.

The participants had a chance to participate in volunteering school for various target groups where participants learned about successful interaction with local communities and principles of self-organization.

The educational program was attended by 172 people total.

The mini-projects created multiple cultural products such as photo exhibitions (Sumy, Kherson, Chernivtsi); small documentary performances (Kyiv), documentary projects (Sumy, Mykolaiv), cultural event featuring various artists. The best works were presented at the Festival of cultural and educational initiatives in Kiev. The program included master classes of foreign experts and supervisors of mini-projects in the field of non-formal education, screenings and discussions of documentary and theatrical performances developed within the Project "Replacing walls with open windows."
