On 9-10 November 2022 the Regional project “Eastern Neighbours” organised its first off-line event in cooperation with the European Association for the Education of Adults (EAEA) - the International Conference on the Role of Adult Learning and Education in the Development of Local Communities.
The purpose of the conference was to present and discuss the successful experience of promoting Adult Learning and Education (ALE) through community-based centres and efficient cooperation with local authorities.
The conference lasted two days and took place in the format of plenary sessions with inputs and presentations by experts, as well as panel discussions, group work and a site visit. The event served as a communication and discussion platform for almost 70 interested specialists working in ALE and lifelong learning with an emphasis on the non-formal education sector from 12 countries of Europe.
Among them, in particular, representatives of ALE-Centres and other non-formal education providers across Europe (e.g. libraries, universities, etc.); ministries and departments of education; representatives of local authorities/municipalities as well as representatives co-organisers EAEA and DVV International. They all had the opportunity to share achievements and discuss challenges in the development and advocacy of adult learning and education at the local and national levels.
During the two days of activities, experts and participants shared their views and practices on the role of ALE in the development of local communities by emphasising the importance of cooperation with local and national authorities in countries.
The new contacts for the future work, showcased successful cases, variety of approaches in cooperation between ALE-Centres and local authorities will serve as impetus, inspiration and argumentation for new successful cases on the role of ALE in the development of local communities in Eastern and South-Easter Europe and South Caucasus, while they be followed on within the next years of the regional project’s implementation.
