New perspectives in life. Involvement of volunteer detainees in information sessions in penitentiary institutions

Sergei got into prison for a serious crime - murder. His wife left him and together with his two children no longer communicate with him.

"I used injectable drugs on a daily basis. Of course I needed money, and that meant I had to commit crimes. If I'm sorry ...? Indisputable, but I can not do anything now. I have to live with this. It's my job to tell other people about the nightmare of drug use and the price they are to pay for this."

Who can be more convincing than the person who has already gone through problematic situations? Taking this into consideration, the NGO "Positive Initiative" with the support of DVV International Moldova from the BMZ funds started for the first time in the Republic of Moldova an initiative on peer to peer learning within the project "Non-formal education and mentoring for effective reintegration of vulnerable population groups" implemented during March-November, 2017.

20 volunteer detainees (16 men and 4 women) participated in the peer to peer training program. During 2 months, 30 mentoring sessions were held in 5 penitentiary institutions. The meetings focused on the following components: providing technical support in carrying out the primary survey, completing the forms, codifying the beneficiaries; information support on specific aspects of treatment programs, performance indicators; mentoring in guiding and supervising individual cases. In support of the work done by the inmates, publications were developed: the "Peer to Peer Guide" and the "Healthy Notes."
