The aim of the visit was to learn more about the current project work of DVV International in the country, visit partners and discuss with stakeholders further development of the adult learning and education sector.

Director of DVV International Christoph Jost visited Ukraine in the period of 22-26 November 2021. The aim of his visit was to learn more deeply about the current project work of DVV International in the country, visit partners and discuss with stakeholders further development of the adult learning and education sector.

During the series of meetings in the capital Kyiv and the city of Lviv partner organisations from the DVV International’s projects funded by the German Federal Ministries for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Foreign Affairs (AA) were met and project sites visited. Besides the BMZ-funded long-term project “Professionalisation of Adult Education Centers in Europa / Country Project Ukraine” aiming the strengthening of national system of adult education in Ukraine there are currently also two AA-funded projects in implementation: “History Competitions 3.0” and “Urban X-Change”. Exchange around the DVV International’s project work in the country was the main topic of the meeting at the German Embassy Kyiv.

In addition, interesting meetings with policy makers from national and local levels took place. On the 23 November a discussion dedicated to the elaborated draft of the Adult Education Law were held at the Ministry of Education and Science. High ranked officials from the Ministry (First Deputy Minister Andrii Vitrenko, General Director of the Directorate of Professional Higher Education Oleh Sharov) and the National Parliament (Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Education Yuliia Hryshyna and Roman Hryshchuk) as well as experts from the civil society (Executive Director of the Ukrainian Adult Education Association Mykyta Andriiev) participated together with representatives of DVV International (Christoph Jost, Levan Kvatchadze, Oleg Smirnov) in the fruitful exchange. Three years ago, Christoph Jost participated in Kyiv at the kick-off meeting dedicated to the beginning of the process of the elaboration of the draft law and now he got presented the results of the comprehensive process (supported by DVV International Ukraine), where various stakeholders were involved. It is expected that in the coming months the Ukrainian Government will present draft of the Adult Education Law to the National Parliament for its’ adoption. The adopted law would open new opportunities for the adult education sector, especially on the level of cities and communities.

Inspiring and fruitful were meetings at the City administration of Lviv. In discussion with Andrii Sadovyi, Mayor of Lviv and his colleagues from the city administration (Natalia Bunda, Head of Development Department and Oleksandr Kobzarev, Director of the City Institute) further plans of cooperation with DVV International were discussed. 2020 Lviv authorities approved the Program for Promotion of non-formal education, which is being implemented altogether by the Lviv Centralized Library System for Adults and the municipal institution The City Institute in cooperation with DVV International Ukraine. Therefore, the city of Lviv considers DVV International as an important partner in the promotion of adult learning offers, which would be accessible and affordable for the population of the city.
