A pilot project on organizing manicure and make-up courses has been launched in Gomel on the premises of Correctional Institution #4. The first study group consists of 6 women who will be trained throughout 5 months.
The group was formed on a competitive basis; the criteria for selection were high motivation, good state of health and presence of personal medical records.
The training programme includes both theoretical and practical sessions that will be lead by the staff of Gomel state vocational college of household services, as well as manicure and make-up specialists from Gomel. The women successfully finishing the course will receive a state-approved certificate that will help them find a job or start their own business in the future.
To organize the courses, a separate room was equipped and the needed implements were purchased from the funds of the project “Education Opens Doors” implemented by DVV International Belarus together with NGO “Community Development Projects” and Directorate of the Department of Penalty Execution within the EU thematic programme “European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights”.
If the project proves to be successful, such a training model could be adopted by other correctional institutions in Belarus.
