Belarusian school in Cham: from the chances to the rights for education

(2010-2011)

The project “Belarusian school in Cham: from the chances to the right for education” was being implemented through 2010-2011 within the EUROPEANS FOR PEACE programme with support from the Foundation «Remembrance, Responsibility and Future». The main objective of the project was research of the issue of access to education in post-war Germany and Belarus for different groups of the youth. The project is implemented jointly by the VHS Cham and the Representative Office of the German Adult Education Association in the Republic of Belarus. Teachers and students of the Robert Schuman Gymnasium as well as Belarusian students from the secondary school No.1 in Novogrudok also participated in the project.

The project “Belarusian school in Cham: from the chances to the right for education” was targeted at learning the education possibilities in post-war years in Germany and Belarus. Special attention was paid to learning educational opportunities that children of the Belarusian emmigrants had in the village of Michelsdorf near Cham. That’s where the Belarusian Yanka Kupala gymnasium was created. The participants of the project conducted research, communicated with the witnesses of historic events, exchanged the results of their work via Internet, as well as during the two meetings that took place in October 2010 in Novogrudok and in March 2011 in Cham.

Besides, the German and Belarusian students learned the development of right to education in Europe and in both countries that participated in the project, discussed the peculiarities of gaining education among all age groups in their countries today.

On March 25, 2011 launching of the exhibition dedicated to the project took place. In November 2011 guests from Cham again visited Novogrudok to participate in launching the exhibition “The Belarusian school in Cham” as well as to take part in the seminar “International cooperation in education”, the main aims of which were drawing conclusions of the joint Belarusian-German project and discussing possible ways of cooperation in future.

Within the project the video film was created, it featured the visit of the Belarusian schholchildren to Cham and launching of the exhibition. The video is available here.
