In the period from August 21 to 28, 2016 in Riga (Latvia) was held Summer Academy of the region of Eastern Neighbors (Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova) for consideration of the professionalization of Adult Education.

The Academy brought together international experts and representatives of academic institutions, research institutes, public and private postgraduate institution of Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus and Uzbekistan. Most of participants were people that enjoy to current practices in the field of Adult Education, experienced and ready to contribute to the development of new curricula, textbooks and materials.

From the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine  in the event participated Oleg Duca  (The Head of Bila Tserkva Vocational Training Staff College by The State Criminal Executive Service of Ukraine). This visit  took place due to last year signed a Memorandum of Cooperation between The State Penitentiary Service of UkraineUkraine, Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine with the representative office of the German NGO "German Association of People's Universities» DVV International in the field of Prisoners Education  and Staff of these Institutions.

The training of participations has been organized: Anita Jacobsone (Regional Director of  DVV International at the region of the Eastern Neighbors); Saskia Yeshenbaher (Researcher and Lecturer at the Department of Adult and Continuing Education at the University of Augsburg (Germany)); Tatiana Kloubert (Doctoral student and Researcher of the Department of Pedagogy, Adult and Continuing Education of the University of Augsburg (Germany)); Yedvard Taylor (Professor of Adult Education at the University of Penn State Harrisburg (USA)) and Toms Urdze (Member of the Latvian Management Training Company Saliedet.Lv, who specializes in teams development and leadership (Latvia).

International experts available explained the following topics:

  • Transformational learning: theory, research and practice,
  • Self-directed learning;
  • Ethics of Adult Education.

Participants listened and correlated information received from the experts to the present situation of the own country in the field of Adult Education. Also they actively discussed on the integration of modern international theoretical and practical approaches, shared their experience with the development and implementation of effective measures for the professionalization of education.

Cognitive for representatives from Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus and Uzbekistan was visiting Adult Education Centers in the cities of Riga, Cesis and Zemhalskii Regional Center of Competence Development. The participants were impresed of the Adult Education Centre of Marine College Novikontas (Riga). There were space classrooms, equipped with the latest simulators (Captain logging controls on ships of different classes), in which workers spend almost the maritime industry various situational exercises.

Classes in the Summer Academy of the Eastern Neighbours were fruitful and lasted seven unforgettable days. All free time for guests was also informative, they have  attended the evening Jurmala and ecological farming «Ekokruzes» (village Yaunpiebalha); participants saw the Paths of Health and Recreation Center «Lido»; were on tour at Rundāle palace and its park.
